the need

The Need: Our public school systems are limited in their capacity to meet the needs of students with disabilities, who have been traditionally underrepresented for years. In 2018, 708 students with varying disabilities were placed in nonpublic schools, many outside the District of Columbia. In the same year the District of Columbia spent over $61 million on nonpublic placements. All students, including those with cognitive and/or behavioral disabilities, have the right to quality education.  We must address this gap in our education system.

curriculum focus

Heru Foundation curriculum meets the needs of our student population. Our curricula include: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), Expeditionary Learning, Vocational Education, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), and The Ron Clark Academy House System.

Family engagement

Heru Foundaton acknowledges that the strongest model of education brings together families, schools, and communities to empower students to reach their fullest potential. Our staff includes a family and community outreach team that strives to build healthy relationships with families to ensure that they are an inclusive part of their child’s education. Our approach ensures that students receive a unified message and feel a strong foundation of support both at school and at home.

community input

Heru Foundation believes that its success is  rooted in building partnerships with the surrounding community - including students, parents, community leaders, local businesses, and other resources whose ideas and feedback can help to build a strong foundation for our growth. We understand that our student community  thrives only when we work to connect with stakeholders and establish ourselves as part of the greater community. For this reason we are committed to fostering relationships with others, and making sure that our school reflects the interests and desires of our community.

honesty. equality. respect. unity.
